Robert Macfarlane’s 2016 book “Landmarks” is a compendium of place-words drawn from dialects of the British Isles, each word a tiny poem conjuring a landscape. A term hailing from Devon, England, “ammil” captures the moment the sun’s rays permeate a thin film of tree frost, refracting the light and awakening the landscape. Rutilated quartz navettes recite this wintry phenomenon, while uncut and rose-cut diamonds and macle diamond crystals radiate below in 18k gold. Glittering brown diamonds and diamond beads dance with the exhilaration of first light, like frost cascading as the sun warms the pines.
